The New York Times, For Kids: “The Invisible Issue”

Got the opportunity to do another of these covers for the awesome Debra Bishop. They are always a blast and its also always such a thrill to see my work in real-life print! This little groovy chameleon is trying to learn how to get noticed! The Invisible issue was pretty broad-reaching on topics and takes on invisibility, but Debra was pretty set on a Chameleon character of some sort. the 60’s aesthetic sort of came about organically through the sketching process. I wanted something with really strong patterns to stand out on the chameleon, and the retro super-graphic style seemed like a good fit for the bill.

Started with the usual batch of thumbnails for composition.

Only sent 17 this time.

(I’ve been trying not to give too many options and just send the one’s I’m excited about.)

“Men Walk On Moon,” the headline from the New York Times from July 21, 1969.

The original Idea was to use a 60s event on a newspaper to solidify the 60s aesthetic of the decor.
Trying for a sixties vibe… New York Times lunar landing replaced by a doily because it was too political? It's fine… I like doilies!

Big thanks to Debra Bishop over at the New York Times (For Kids!)

Always a thrill to hunt down a paper copy of the Times on a Sunday Morning.
