Such a fun project working with the Creative team at Last Week Tonight.
The assignment was to create a wine label for John Oliver’s Cabernet Sauvign“John” With some pretty hilarious sub text (see right) How much fun.
Started with some obvious explorations.
In a toga ready for a Greek Bacchanalian orgy,
as a silly pink unicorn and of course,
John as a horse.
we handled the label design as well, creating this beautiful font. Very decorative which later on was simplified to make it more legible.
I’m not sure if the horse really looked like John, but it was super funny.
So thrilled how this turned out. Can’t wait to have a couple bottles and toast another fun project.
The normal over exploration of ideas with a couple dozen ideas. I love this part of the process and always have trouble stopping at three.
Some tighter comps to show how the label would look with type. Trying to figure out the look of the label.
The final label on the bottle.
After everything was wrapped, they came back for an additional illustration to accompany the website the wine will be sold through.
They wanted John and the Horse to be on a sort of date after the photoshoot/ successful product launch. We thought it would be really funny if John was way more into the date than the horse was.
(If you are not aware, there has been a long-running joke throughout “Last Week Tonight” about “fuckable horses”)
This was a little tricky to get right but overall I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Big big thanks to Jeremy and the rest of the art team over at Last Week Tonight, and to John Oliver for putting together such a fantastic show, and more and more, not being afraid to speak truth to power. Thank you for what you do!
